Logic is Variable

AI-Driven Real-Life Journal

Dr. Arthur Brooks prompts

I'm counting down the days till I join my daughter Shaya in Canada next year. The journey's already begun - I'm lost in daydreams, soaking up all things Canadian. Turns out, anticipation is the best part. Behavioral science says it's not just the lead-up; it's part of the experience itself. So, I'm diving in - reading, learning, imagining (Shan, Z and T). Giving myself the gift of joy before I even pack my bags.

The trip will be a memory, but anticipation lets me savor it now.

And Lalu, it is all due to you.

You don’t need more stuff. You need to want less

Dr. Arthur Brooks

Many people believe happiness increases when they accumulate more. That could mean more money, more status, or more possessions. But in behavioral science, we understand satisfaction differently.

It turns out that happiness is not simply about what we have. It’s about the relationship between what we have and what we want.

The true equation is: Happiness = Haves ÷ Wants.

If your wants keep rising faster than your haves, your satisfaction will fall—even if your circumstances improve.

Recent data backs this up. In longitudinal research such as the Global Flourishing Study, people who report high life satisfaction consistently exhibit stronger habits of self-regulation and a greater sense of meaning, not necessarily greater material success.

Here are two ways to put this strategy into practice:

1. Create a reverse bucket list.

Instead of writing down everything you still want to achieve, make a list of things you’ve already done, or consciously decide you no longer need.

2. Audit your desires.

One helpful exercise is to list your major goals and ask: Would this still matter to me if no one else knew I achieved it? If the answer is no, it may not be a goal rooted in meaning.

In research on midlife satisfaction, those who reoriented their ambition from status to service, especially men, reported higher purpose and deeper relationships over time.

A Reverse Bucket List

A reverse bucket list is a list of desires, wants, or goals that you consciously detach yourself from by writing them down and crossing them off. Here's an example:

I want to buy a luxury car.

(Crossed off) I acknowledge the desire, but I'm not attached to it.

I desire a vacation home by the beach.

(Crossed off) I'm letting go of the need for a second home.

I wish to get promoted to a high-level position.

(Crossed off) I'm focusing on my current work, and the outcome is not what defines me.

I want to be followed by thousands on social media.

(Crossed off) My self-worth isn't tied to online validation.

By crossing off these desires, you're acknowledging them but releasing the attachment to their fulfillment, potentially leading to a sense of freedom and reduced stress.

Stop Carrying Tomorrow Before It Arrives

"If I carry today's load, it is manageable. If I carry tomorrow's load as well, it becomes heavy. Most people are exhausted not by today's problems, but by tomorrow's imagined ones."

Detachment is not coldness — it is emotional control (in Buddhism, detachment means learning not to let other people’s behavior control your inner peace).

Happy Aging

Society pushes “stay active, stay useful, reinvent yourself” as the key to happy aging. The article argues the opposite often works better: learning to need less, sit comfortably without a defined role or new project, and stop warring with the natural process of aging. Freedom in later life comes from needing less, not doing more.

Using Things Saved for Special Occasions

Sophie Cliff, The Joyful Coach, positive psychologist and author, suggests, “Whether it’s cracking open a new notebook, lighting a candle, or spritzing your favourite perfume, using something you’ve been saving for best has several benefits. Firstly, you’ll get a hit of happiness from using something nice, but perhaps more importantly, you’ll signal to your subconscious that the average everyday is important and worthy of seizing.”

Walk in the Lahore School

The Lahore School of Economics main campus truly lives up to its reputation as a peaceful, green oasis right in the city. With over 35 acres, more than 80% devoted to lawns, trees, and open spaces, plus those iconic peacocks roaming around, it's the perfect spot for a mindful walk. No wonder it feels heavenly; the lush greenery, shaded paths, and calm atmosphere make it ideal for soaking in those heart, brain, and mood benefits we talked about — better circulation, clearer thinking, stabilized energy, and that gentle sense of presence without any pressure to "achieve" anything.

As I stroll those winding paths (maybe past the red-brick buildings, open lawns, beds of roses, or under the big trees), it becomes my daily reminder to just be — no to-do list required. I breathe in the fresh air, notice the birds or the way the light filters through the leaves, and let the walk recharge me naturally. This is a beautiful way to tie together the permission to exist freely with the simple, compounding health wins from consistent movement.

I enjoy every step of these campus walks that are a real gift. If the weather's nice (or even if it's a bit misty/foggy like some Lahore mornings), it only adds to the magic.
